HELLO
My name is Mandy Tait and I am an artist based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland
I create artwork using a wide variety of media for commission and licencing.
I grew up in Shetland, a rather windy and beautiful group of islands located in the far north of Scotland. It is a place like no other, rich in culture and wildlife, where resourcefulness reigns supreme and trees don't. I was surrounded by people who could make something from nothing, whether it be music, knitwear, artwork or food. So it was pretty inevitable that this philosophy would rub off on me. Early married life took me to Clackmannanshire where we raised our family and although I was a distance from my homeland, the desire to pursue a career doing something I loved beckoned and I decided to go back to school.
My love of printmaking began while studying Illustration at Dundee. When I graduated, I set up a little studio in Alloa under the name Natty Maid making handprinted stationery and textiles for sale in various UK galleries and shops.
We have now relocated to a lovely little place called Rothienorman in Aberdeenshire and a change of scene has inspired me to take Natty Maid into the world of Surface Pattern Design. My printmaking is now being combined with art materials that have not seen the light of day in quite some time. And although in days of old, I would have classed myself as a technophobe, persistence has prevailed and I now class Photoshop and Illustrator as friends and pivotal to my role as a surface pattern designer and illustrator.
.
I enjoy mark making using a wide variety of wet and dry media and printmaking to create motifs which I then combine digitally to create designs. Sometimes I work messy and sometimes I don't. It keeps things spontaneous that way and I don't get restricted.
I am drawn to mid century and folk art designs and I would say that there are flavours of this in my work along with a whole load of other elements that I hope reflects my love of what I do.
Thank you for visiting my website.
